This group is for you if you would like to:

  • Reduce guilt and shame
  • Recognize your unmet needs
  • Regulate intense emotions
  • Learn how to set boundaries, communicate needs, and respond more effectively to the realities of your own unique situation

Reconnect with your kiddo… and yourself.

Build Connections. Find Community. Learn Practical (and realistic) skills to get you through the toughest moments of motherhood.

Each 90-minute group session blends skills-based education and supportive conversation. We’ll explore how child rearing can prime us for burnout and self-doubt. We’ll pay special attention to the unmet needs and mixed emotions that being a mom brings so that you feel validated and supported. Above all, we’ll help you construct a viable alternative to the intensity and overwhelm of modern motherhood.

Whether you’re feeling full blown mom rage, quiet overwhelm, or somewhere in the middle, this group is a non-judgmental and supportive space to find a little more ease (in a stage of life where nothing feels easy!).

introducing yourself, exploring where you feel stuck, and establishing your desired goals for this program
You’re stressed, with no time to regulate! Identifying the main nervous system hijackers…and how to gain a little more space. We help you tune into your nervous system and access somatic strategies to ground yourself and co-regulate (even in hot button moments!) so that you can make it through those harrowing mother-child interactions intact.
Mom Rage is a buzzword, but what does it actually look like when it’s happening to you? And how did you get there? We will help you get to the root cause of your Mom Rage triggers so that you can leverage your self-awareness to be able to anticipate what will set you off. This will help you to catch yourself, and access the skills we teach you to turn your anger into something constructive – rather than destructive.
We are firm believers that behind every bad reaction lies a pretty reasonable need that isn’t being met. We help you identify these unmet needs and look at what internal and external factors might be getting in your way of meeting them. From there we can start to help you take these needs more seriously – and help you strategize on how to bring the major players in your life on board
We use the word frustrated a lot! But what does it really mean? It means there is an uncomfortable gap between what you long for, and your reality. The struggle is real, and the things we long for are often legit (like respect, for example!). Sometimes, though, we need to reality check our expectations. We help you take an inventory of your frustrations, and examine the expectations and assumptions that sometimes set us up for disappointment.
Are you excessively hard on yourself? Do you always fall short of your own expectations, and then ruminate on how you could be doing better? Well, join the mom club. We don’t want you to stop thriving and aspiring, but the link between self-criticism and overwhelm is tighter than you might imagine, and we want to give you some breathing space by helping you adopt a more generous, kind and realistic relationship with your struggles. And if the term self-compassion makes you cringe…it won’t by the end of this session.
Real self-care starts with boundaries – but why are the boundaries that honour our own needs so hard to stick to? We help you identify which areas of your life are in need of protecting, and how to stick to the boundaries you set so that you can restore your energy and connect with the parts of yourself that need attention.
Have you noticed that it’s sometimes the people with whom we are the closest that we have the hardest time setting boundaries or communicating? Here, we more deeply explore aspects of your relationship with your partner that provoke insecurity, trigger powerful emotions, or seem boundary-resistant, and explore beneath the surface to see what might be getting in the way. We will provide you with strategies to connect and communicate, as well as self awareness exercises to highlight where you get stuck.
Hurting people we love feels just.plain.awful. The alternative to going down a shame spiral is engaging in meaningful repair, which can not only validate the pain that was caused, but also strengthen trust and foster secure attachment.
Integration, wrap up, next steps, identifying areas for further therapy or self-help.

Common Questions

Support groups are made up of people who share common struggles. We believe that there is incredible healing potential in feeling seen and understood. Support groups go beyond venting. At Open Space Counselling, we acknowledge that some problems are complicated – but we aim to strike a balance between holding space for the messiness and identifying areas for growth and change.
No you don’t! Anyone who meets the group criteria is welcome to register. If you’re not sure, please reach out to us (hyperlink to our email) to ask us if this group is a good fit for you right now.

In order to participate in this group, you must:

  • Live in Canada
  • Be a mother or stepmother to a child (or children) 12 years of age or under
  • Be willing to show up in a nonjudgmental way, open to hearing about others’ experiences, and willing to share your own

Note: This group is not a replacement for therapy. If you have complex concerns that would be best worked through with a therapist (and what mom doesn’t?!), we recommend you see an individual therapist (if you live in BC, we can hook you up).

No, we don’t. We also don’t consider this to be a parenting group – it’s a group for moms. However, some of the materials we use will discuss strategies for dealing with your (and your kiddo’s) emotions and needs. We consider these strategies to be ones that are based on respect, emotional intelligence, and self-worth, rather than part of any particular parenting theory.

Yup. Confidentiality is key to group safety and trust. However, there are a few legal exceptions to a counsellor’s duty of confidentiality: if there is a concern of imminent harm to you or another (e.g., threats of suicide or homicide), if a child is in need of protection (e.g., abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence) or if your file has been subpoenaed for a court case.

If you need to withdraw from the group, we require at least 48 hours’ notice before the first session. If you provide less than 48 hours’ notice or do not attend the first session, you will be responsible for the full group fee, which will be charged to the credit card we have on file.
You will need to check with your provider to ensure that they cover the services of an RCC, and that they cover group support.
Yes! Because this is a support group, rather than a therapy group, anyone in Canada is eligible to participate (you must still meet the criteria for this group).
