About Our Depression Therapy Program

Depression Treatment

Open Space Counselling provides in-person depression counselling in Vancouver and virtually across all of BC. We recommend 8-10 sessions to help you pay closer attention to your internal experience and how it’s affecting your life.

An nuanced examination of your internal landscape (internal conflicts, complicated feelings, and self-protective strategies) to dislodge your current perspectives

The power of an authentic human encounter cannot be overstated when it comes to treating depression and low mood. At Open Space Counselling, we provide a genuine and compassionate therapeutic presence. We utilize a range of evidence-based interventions, ranging from cognitive therapy to emotion focused therapy, to help you genuinely believe in your self-worth again. We tailor your treatment plan specifically to you.

This depression treatment program is pay per session, and can be paused at any time. To give yourself the best chance of noticing change, we recommend a minimum of 10 sessions.

If you’re experiencing mild to moderate depression, therapy alone has been shown to be effective in improving mood, self-worth and self-care. However, for people with more serious depression, research points to a combination of medication and therapy as the most effective approach. Talk to your doctor if you are wondering about taking antidepressants.
Multiple forms of therapy are effective at treating depression. How do we choose which therapeutic modality to use with you? At your first session, we will explore your mood, relationships, and lifestyle so that we can understand your depression as thoroughly as possible. Once we have a deeper understanding of the emotional, cognitive, and relational factors at play in your life, we will tailor your treatment accordingly with therapeutic interventions that will help you shift your negative mindset, process painful feelings, and reconnect with yourself.

Maybe you’ve already tried a lot of things to improve your mood, like exercising, reading self-help books, practising gratitude. If you are still waking up with negative thoughts about yourself, about the day ahead, and feeling down on your life, it’s time to get help. If you are wondering how people put up with you, and wondering when they’re going to give up on you, it’s time to get help. If you are having suicidal thoughts, or just don’t want to be here, it’s time to get help (right now).

For many people, depression is a disorder that will come and go. Therapy can help treat not only the depressive episode that you are having right now, but it can provide you with the tools, mindset, and emotional self-care to reduce the severity of depression relapses.

Research shows that generally eight sessions are effective in treating acute depression (intense and sudden onset). Chronic symptoms (long term depression) typically require 14 or more sessions for a positive outcome. The type of improvement you can expect in therapy is related to the client therapist relationship, practising the skills and mindset learned in therapy outside sessions, and completing the recommended duration of therapy sessions. The good news is that many people start to notice some differences take hold very early on in therapy.

What you can expect from

  • After one session we will provide you with our recommendations for the length and frequency of treatment, as well as an overview of the key issues.
  • After four to six sessions, your unconscious feelings and negative beliefs about yourself will be brought to your conscious awareness, allowing you to respond to them constructively.
  • By twelve sessions you will have the tools you need to manage your mood and take actions that improve your energy, outlook, and relationships.
