Populations

Many people reach out for therapy – whether eagerly or reluctantly – when they are struggling or in distress. Some people reach out because they have a sense that they want more for themselves, even if they don’t know what.  Often, people come to therapy wanting to rid themselves of negative patterns. I like to also explore what we can add to your life – new perspectives or ways of being to help bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

In counselling, we explore (and challenge) stories we hold about ourselves and others. I find that some of the narratives that influence our perspectives, how we relate, and the choices we make are often fear-based. Through ongoing conversations and explorations, we can get curious about the stories that we believe to be true, and co-create new narratives that allow you to learn from past pains, face current circumstances, and create new, healthier patterns.

I help people who are feeling lost or disconnected develop more trust and confidence. My clients gradually report feeling more connected to themselves and others, allowing them to move through the world with a greater sense of ease. Life will always present us with stressful situations and emotionally provoking events, but I have seen how good therapy can prepare us to engage with many of these challenges with stability and clarity, rather than overwhelm or passivity.

What You Can Expect When Working With Bernadette

Clients are often surprised at how fast the time has gone by or how comfortable they feel in sharing with me. You can expect a warm, thoughtful, curious conversation where all aspects of yourself are welcome – whether that’s joy, anger, confusion, or laughter. In my role as a therapist, I go beyond simply being a compassionate listener – I am collaborative, engaged, and always aim to offer my clients a takeaway from the session. That might look like processing a difficult loss, helping you see a blind spot, or amplifying an inner voice that needs attention. Clients have often said they appreciate my ability to bring seemingly scattered or complex thoughts together and connect them in a meaningful way.

I believe that our work outside of the session is just as important, and like to focus on how you can integrate our work into your everyday life. This is where the “magic” happens, and I love seeing how problems can dissolve away when clients are given the right tool.

Bernadette's Experience & Training

Early in my career, my internships focused on non-profit work, including work with children, and I found it incredibly meaningful to engage with such a diverse range of clients. My personal experiences have  fueled my curiosity about people and their experiences, driving me toward this field. I’ve since developed a deep understanding of what makes people relate, respond, and react to events and people the way they do. I have a keen interest in various forms of neurodivergence, and am especially skilled in supporting neurodiverse individuals. I love integrating creativity and playfulness into sessions that help make therapy more engaging and meaningful.

More About Bernadette

As a child of an immigrant and someone who lived with undiagnosed ADHD for most of my life, it took me a while to figure out who I was. The road was a bit confusing at times, but it’s been an ongoing journey of self-discovery, and I love exploring it through different hobbies. Whether it’s movement-based exercise classes, trying out new recipes, or experimenting with art, I’m always looking for new ways to learn about myself.

Outside of therapy, I’m a huge fan of hiking (though I always question my choices halfway up), thrifting (finding the perfect item is such a thrill), and I’m a huge coffee lover. My ideal day is pretty simple: a little bit of exercise, some time spent outdoors, exploring a new hobby, and hanging out with the people I love.
