Please be advised that Atrena’s internship at Open Space will be concluding at the end of August, and she is no longer accepting new clients at this time.

Have you ever heard yourself think “why bother?” Or “it doesn’t matter what I do, things seem to be stacked against me!” It can be hard to commit to being more genuine and ‘doing the work’ when there are so many toxic people, systems, and factors outside of our control. My work with clients focuses on taking personal responsibility and identifying internal motivation to grow and heal, while still acknowledging that the path to change can be complicated.

I help people who struggle with self-doubt and insecurities access more confidence, connection, and ease. I find that when we are able to truly value ourselves – including our vulnerabilities and quirks – we start to become less reactive and better able to take emotional and social risks. I love seeing my clients start to improve their relationships and live with more meaning.

What You Can Expect When Working With Atrena

My work is client-centered, meaning your needs and goals are the primary focus. I strive to create a safe, understanding space where clients can explore their experiences without judgment, working together to develop effective coping strategies and build on their inherent strengths.

I don’t believe in therapy that is formulaic or overly rigid. My fluid and integrative approach means that depending on where you are at, we may process emotions, explore past experiences, challenge negative thought patterns, or find practical strategies to help you with present-day issues.

My professional background further enhances my ability to support neurodivergent clients. As a former behavioral interventionist, I worked extensively with children on the autism spectrum, giving me valuable insights into the diverse manifestations of neurodivergence in younger populations.

This combination of personal and professional experiences allows me to offer a uniquely empathetic and informed approach to counselling.

More About Atrena

I am a neurodivergent, bisexual individual with experience exploring both monogamy and non-monogamy. Currently, I am a student completing my Master’s Degree at City University.

My cultural background as an Iranian-Canadian has deeply influenced how I approach counselling. Growing up with immigrant parents who held different views from mine taught me to value diverse perspectives and appreciate the impact of intergenerational trauma. Cultural stigma often makes it difficult to ask for help, and this inspires me to create a welcoming space for anyone who may feel uncertain about seeking therapy.

As a neurodivergent person living with ADHD, I understand the challenges that come with living with neurodiversity in the modern world. My personal journey has equipped me with a deep empathy for clients; I’ve navigated the complexities of impulsivity, executive dysfunction, relationship concerns, restlessness, and anxiety. This has shaped my approach to counselling, enabling me to provide nuanced and compassionate guidance, as well as practical skills.

I love meeting new people, playing piano, dancing, and yoga. I love movement and find opportunities to dance in any setting (don’t worry, though – I won’t dance in our session!) Clients will find my warm and lively personality inviting and welcoming. I’ve been told that my non-judgmental and warm vibe helps people feel that they can talk to me about anything. Whether you’re keen to open up and dive right in, or a first timer to therapy who has a lot of skepticism or apprehension about the process, I will meet you where you’re at.
