Who Are We?

Open Space Counselling is a skilled team of therapists known in the community for our high levels of attentiveness and expertise. We help you work through – and move beyond – the areas in your life in which you are struggling. 

We are known for being genuine. We don’t talk like we’re out of a textbook – we are candid, curious, and deeply caring. Above all, we are quality-driven and productive: we want to help you get to the root of your struggles, and alleviate suffering in a way that lasts. 

What makes us different?

We believe that beneath the struggles, conflicts, and anxieties that have brought you to counselling, you have the capacity to relate and act in a more authentic way. We see therapy as a process in which we look beneath defensive patterns and help you tap into a more connected, genuine and confident version of yourself. 

We take the time to understand your inner world and how you roll, either as an individual or as a couple. We identify and explore your untapped emotions and needs. We also clarify how your defensive stances may be disconnecting you from others, creating distance or conflict in relationships. Together, we can help you clarify how you feel and what you need.

Likely, you’ve tried in many ways to change – perhaps you’ve read self-help books, taken up meditation, and thrown yourself into exercise. These are all constructive strategies, but may not address your deeper issues – and you may find yourself, once again, getting stuck. This is one of the reasons we don’t simply deploy tips and strategies for issues that might have a more complex emotional context. We also don’t let you spend a session venting about the partner, the job, the parent (etc), who is making life unbearable for you…the relief that venting provides is short-term, trust us. Simply put: we don’t want you to feel better for a couple of days after your session, only to fall back into the same groove after the therapy glow wears off.

Who Are Our Clients?

Our clients typically are high functioning and competent on the outside, and yet inside are struggling – often with anxiety, self-doubt, or loneliness. On any given day, we sit with new parents,  burnt out professionals, couples at their wits’ end, or people reeling with difficult transitions. Depending on what is bringing you to therapy, our work together might involve:

  • freeing you from persistent self-doubt 
  • processing painful emotions, such as guilt, anger, sadness and shame
  • working on relationship difficulties, including ruptures in trust, communication breakdowns, and defensiveness
  • reducing anxiety, chronic stress, and tension
  • coping with  break-ups, grief and loss, and painful life events
  • healing the relational effects of having a childhood in which you were invalidated, dismissed or mistreated (developmental trauma)
